A Quick Guide to Cleaning Every Type of Radiator

ree

Radiators quietly do the hard work all winter — until dust, lint, and mystery fuzz slow them down. A quick clean keeps your home warmer and your air cleaner. Here’s how to handle each type:

Cast Iron Radiators

Old-school charm, serious dust collectors.

    •    Turn off the heat and let it cool.

    •    Vacuum between columns with a brush attachment.

    •    Use a long radiator or bottle brush wrapped in a cloth to reach deep spots.

    •    Wipe the exterior with warm, soapy water or an eco-friendly cleaner.

    •    Vinegar and water (1:1) helps remove stubborn grime or rust.

Pro tip: Put a towel underneath — dust always falls down.

Panel Radiators (Flat or Convectors)

Modern and sleek… until you peek inside.

    •    Turn off and cool down.

    •    Pop off the top grill and side panels.

    •    Brush or blow out dust between the fins.

    •    Vacuum everything, then wipe down with a mild cleaner.

Pro tip: A hairdryer on “cool” works great for blowing dust out from the back.

Baseboard Radiators

Low and efficient, but dust bunny magnets.

    •    Turn off the heat.

    •    Remove the front cover and vacuum the fins gently.

    •    Wipe the cover and reinstall once dry.

Pro tip: Add a vent filter on top to keep dust out longer.

Electric Radiators & Space Heaters

Plug-in convenience, same cleaning rules.

    •    Unplug first.

    •    Vacuum vents and grills.

    •    Wipe with a damp cloth — no spraying directly.

    •    Use a touch of vinegar for stubborn spots.

Pro tip: Clean monthly during heavy use to prevent overheating.

Bottom line:

Radiators work better (and look better) when they’re clean. Give them a little love once or twice a year, and they’ll keep your home toasty without making your air feel stale.
