Winter Cleaning Essentials: 5 Hidden Spots to Tackle Before the Chill Sets In

As winter nears, it’s easy to overlook some less obvious areas that could use a good cleaning—but freshening up these spots can make a big difference in comfort and efficiency. Dust, grime, and other buildup can impact air quality and heating effectiveness, so take a little time to prep your home with these five must-clean essentials before winter fully arrives.

Start with your ceiling fans. Even though fans may not be in use as much during winter, they collect a surprising amount of dust, which can affect air circulation when you turn them on. Running them on a low, reverse setting in the winter can help push warm air back down, making your home feel cozier. Use a microfiber cloth or an old pillowcase to carefully wipe down each blade, trapping the dust inside instead of letting it scatter.

Radiators and baseboard heaters are another often-forgotten winter prep item. Dust, hair, and lint settle around these heaters, which makes them less effective at warming your home. With a vacuum’s brush attachment, clear out debris around baseboards, and use a compressed air canister for radiator fins. Wipe surfaces down with a damp cloth to ensure you’re maximizing their heat output. This small step can improve heating efficiency and even reduce your energy costs.

Then, turn your attention to your air vents. During winter, we’re less likely to open windows, meaning indoor air quality can quickly decline if vents are clogged with dust. Remove vent covers and clean them in soapy water, letting them dry before reinstalling. A professional duct cleaning can also be beneficial if it’s been years since the last cleaning, as this helps reduce allergens and ensures your heating system isn’t working overtime.

Humidifiers deserve special care as well. Winter air tends to be dry, and humidifiers bring back the moisture needed for comfort, but they can quickly become breeding grounds for bacteria and mold if not cleaned. Empty and clean the water reservoir regularly, and use a mixture of vinegar and water to remove mineral deposits and sanitize the surfaces. Clean humidifiers not only keep your air moist but also keep it healthier.

Finally, your refrigerator coils might not come to mind as a winter must-clean item, but they’re important. The coils often gather dust and pet hair, which can force the appliance to work harder to keep your food cold. Unplug the refrigerator, locate the coils (typically at the back or bottom), and use a vacuum with a crevice attachment to remove dust. Keeping the coils clean helps your fridge run more efficiently, saving energy at a time when heating costs can rise.

Giving these five overlooked areas a little extra attention as winter approaches can help keep your home warmer, more energy-efficient, and healthier. And once they’re clean, you can sit back, stay cozy, and enjoy the season in a fresher, more comfortable space.
